Obituary

Dr. Stephen J. Miller (Steve), age 77 passed away suddenly on March 9th, 2014 at the hospital. He had been working hard to rehab after he had a hip replacement and several broken ribs from a fall earlier in the year. Steve was predeceased by his beloved mother-in-law Ruth Pierick, his parents, malamutes: Bear, Wolf and Blizzard, and others he cared for deeply. He is survived by his dearest friends and caregivers, Roberta Pierick and malamute Ripley, his three children Jessica, Rodney, Andrew, and many friends from a wide variety of places, disciplines and interests that will mourn his passing. Dr. Miller had a distinguished academic career: he graduated St. Peter’s College in New York with a B.S. and received his doctorate in sociology from St. Louis University. He was a Professor at Brandeis University for many years before becoming an Associate Dean at the Harvard Medical School. He was vice president of external affairs (Affiliated Hospital Center) at Harvard before being appointed Associate Provost Northwestern University and moving the family to Chicago in 1976. Steve was greatly moved to help those who were marginalized by society. He was an early founder and tireless worker on behalf of Bonaventure House (Alexian Brothers) and was a strong advocate for those stricken with HIV/AIDS. Even after retirement he could be found working with organizations such as America’s Athletes with Disabilities and Prevention Partnership to name a few. He was a prolific author, wrote numerous books and peer-reviewed articles in the sociology, health and organizational research fields, as well as his other varied interests. Steve liked to say farewell to his friends with the statement: “God loves you and so do I”. He was also known to add “but He loves me more”. Steve loved his family, friends, malamutes and will be missed greatly by them. GOD LOVES YOU STEVE, and so do we!
