Obituary
The Florence and Laurence Spungen Family Foundation regrets to announce the passing of Laurence W. Spungen. Mr. Spungen, 84, died in his home on July 28th with family members at his side. Mr. Spungen’s drive for success began on the track and field team at Marshall High School in Chicago. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1952 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Along with his father, Nathan, and brother, Kenneth, he built a small ball bearing surplus company (on the South Side of Chicago) into a multi-national third generation manufacturing and distribution corporation of industrial products related to the bearing and chain industry. Laurence’s enthusiasm for life did not end with business–he also devoted himself to acting in community theatre and a “frustrating” game of golf. During his last days Laurence was comforted by the fact that his legacy will be passed on to future generations. His family was able to spend time telling him how fortunate they are that his success created a platform to “give back” to the community through the Florence and Laurence Spungen Family Foundation. Not only did he make a lasting impression on everyone he met, but through this act of “Tzedakah” he and his late wife created a tradition that will honor their memory for years to come. Mr. Spungen was preceded in death by his wife Florence (nee Levinson) who died in 2012. He is survived by his children, Carol (Aaron Lieberman) of California, Debbi, Daniel (Natalie), and Glenn (Linda) Spungen; grandchildren Melissa Ament, Jonathan, Joshua, Leanna, Jacob, and Talia Spungen, and brother Kenneth (Norma). Services and internment have been held.
