Learning of the loss of Aunt Sylvia prompted recall of how kind she had been to me one day, years ago. I was spending a week visiting a friend in Evanston. The Fine four lived in Skokie at the time. I phoned with nothing more in mind than saying hello.
Aunt Sylvia insisted we get together; the next afternoon, we did. Conversation over lunch was followed by more talk while walking through the mall. She bought me a key-chain, I remember. Wished then I had the sense of it I have now; if I had, I might’ve held on to that little keepsake all these years. How sweet it would be to have that little memento to look at now.
But that special day didn’t end at the mall. She brought me back to the house in Skokie. Larry and I had a nice cousinly visit when he got home from school. (Steve was away at college).
Still the day wasn’t finished. After Uncle Joe returned home the three of us went out to dinner, then to a live performance of Rita Moreno’s one woman adaptation of “The Miracle Worker”.
It was such a “Fine” day for me all those years ago; Aunt Sylvia’s doing, it was. I don’t remember telling her thank you; I hope I did. Wished I had told her thank you more than once over the years when I had that opportunity.
Another year is going by and has taken another loved one with it. Blessed Be Her Memory. Condolences to Larry & Phyllis, Steve & Sherry, and all of Aunt Sylvia’s Chicago family from Mary and me
