Joanne “Joan” Hamer, nee Kushner, 87, loving wife of the late Martin Hamer; mother of Brian (Madelynn) and Shelley (the late David) Wax; grandma of Sam, Ilana, Benjy, Adam and Jessie; sister of the late Jeanne Shapiro; aunt of Rick and Robbie; friend of so many. Passionate about justice, her heritage and her family and friends. Chapel service Friday, 12:15 PM at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 W. Rand Road, Arlington Heights. Internment Shalom Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Illinois Holocaust Museum, 9603 Woods Drive, Skokie, IL 60077, where she was a volunteer for many years. I have been attending the Levy Center exercise class for over 2 years, and Joan and I shared a spot together next to each other. She was a “veteran” member of the class and was one of the first to befriend me. I will always remember her kindness and interest in others, and her friendliness to me. There is a black mark on the gym floor at the Center, which was our “landmark” of where to stand, and we used to kid each other as to who could find it first. i will never see that mark without thinking of her. May her memory be for a blessing
