I first met Jerry in Evanston when we were both in the same Army Reserve Unit, then our Unit moved to Rosemont, ultimately when the Wall went up in Berlin we were activated to Fort Devens, MA. Jerry, Brenda, Bobby and myself became good friends while we there laughing trying to make the best out of disruption and rumors. All the time Captain Frey was in command from Evanston to Devens and he was a “piece of work”, delighted to be there in his starched uniform and sunglasses. Jerry was an elite part of the cooks staff, with Howie Glanz, Archie Turk, Aaron San, and John Pappas. While on KP Jerry saved me from the dreaded “Greasetrap” on several occasions. We ultimately were mustered out continued being friends.
Jerry was a “Mensch” and lucky to have known him. Our heartfelt sympathies to Brenda, Kim,
Jodi, Michael and the entire family.

Add on to previous Memory. Forgot Howie Glantz as another member of the elite cooks of our Reserve Unit. Can you imagine all the receipes these cooks learned coming from Chicago, including the Army version of SOS? Again what a privilege to know Jerry.

First met Jerry at the Army Reserve Site in Evanston then onto to another Site at Devon and Higgins, Camp McCoy in Wisconsin where we were activated and headed to Ft. Devens, MA all the time under the watchful command of Captain Peter Frey. When we got to Devens Brenda and us became good friends laughing at the way it was during that time because the rumors were worse than the activation. We all thought that Captain Frey was behind those rumors. While we were at Devens Jerry was an elite member of the Cooks, which included John Pappas, Aaron Sak, Archie Turk etc. KP was tolerable because Jerry was there to save us from the “Greasetrap”. Jerry was a friend and a mensch, lucky to have known him.

Dearest Brenda and Family: Gerry was one of our brothers with different mothers. Al Becker, myself and Gerry were going to have an early dinner this week. Perhaps I will go to the restaurant by myself; sit quietly and chat with Gerry. When we visited at the country club for his 80th birthday, Cousin Kenny, Al Becker and myself lamented how we were all 80ish. Cousin Mitch called from California because he couldn’t travel and they laughed while chatting with one another. I doubt that you need anything; if you do, call any time.
Much love. Allan and Ghia Ackerman (a/k/a Cousin Johnny)
