Obituary

Dr. David Alan Winkelstein, age 81, of Chicago, Illinois passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2019. A private memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 20, 2019 and following, the family will be receiving guests from 1:30pm – 3:30pm at the home of Joy and Steve Baer, 4717 N Paulina Street, Chicago, Illinois 60640. David was born on July 6, 1938 in Syracuse, New York, the son of Sidney and Sadie Winkelstein. He graduated from Nottingham High School in 1956, Syracuse University in 1960 and then earned his medical degree from The Chicago Medical School (now Rosalind Franklin University) in 1964. David met Virginia “Ginny” Bilisoly during his residency while delivering a baby together at Chicago Maternity Center and they married on June 13, 1965 and spent almost 50 years together. They settled in the Chicago area, where he practiced as an accomplished and well-respected radiologist at Resurrection Hospital for 30 years before he retired. He made many wonderful lifetime friends through the Resurrection community with his warm, friendly, and funny ways. David also loved his family, gardening, bicycling, city adventures, movies and all types of cars, but especially GTO’s and Corvettes. Some speculate that most of all, he loved his daughters…we mean dogs: Cassie (1988-2001), Ginger (2002-2009) and his beloved Riley, who already misses him dearly. David’s most recent retirement years have been spent in downtown Chicago enjoying his grandchildren, cabbing around town, spicing up the Brookdale Lakeshore community and visiting with family here in Chicago and San Jose, California. Our family is so grateful for the quality time we’ve had with him. David is survived by his daughters Joy (Steve) Baer and Jill (Aldo) Lopez, two beloved grandchildren Sydney and Lewis Baer, and nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia “Ginny” Winkelstein, brother Robert Winkelstein and both of his parents.
