Obituary

Irving Abramson, dearest father of Fran Abramson, Jan (Paul) Stepanczuk and Lee (Meryl) Abramson, passed away 5/16/23 at the age of 97. He was married for 72 years to his beloved wife, Doris, until her death in 2020. He was a devoted grandfather of 12 and great grandfather of 6. He is predeceased by his parents, Louis Abramson and Mollie Kushnir Abramson, and his sister, Annette Abramson. Born in Chicago, Irv graduated from Lane Tech High School and shortly thereafter enlisted in the army. He fought and was injured in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. He received a Purple Heart for his service. When Irv returned to Chicago, he met and married Doris. He then went into the family business, Friedman Auto Parts, building it into a thriving business. In his spare time he used his creativity and talents when he wrote and directed plays for various groups. Doris and Irv travelled the world in their retirement and enjoyed life together and with their many friends. Irv had a strong commitment to his community, being involved in many volunteer activities and boards. He was also very involved in fundraising for Honor Flight Chicago and spoke about his experiences in the service at many events and schools. He will be missed by many people. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Honor Flight Chicago, honorflightchicago.org. Graveside service, Sunday 10 AM at Shalom Memorial Park,1700 W. Rand Road, Arlington Heights. My dear cousin Irv has been inspiration to me my entire life: He was a hero serving our country in WWII. I was barely 5 years old when he returned from the war. I remember him in his army uniform, picking me up and giving me a big hug. Everytime we saw each other, I felt his warmth and genuine affection for me. He was a business success and he shared valuable advice as to how he dealt with business challenges. He took positions of responsibility in various organization where he was a member. He also was a talented writer. I will always be grateful that he documented his life in an autobiography telling both his own story and our family history. Irv always had a very close relationship with my father Ben Kushnir. After my father passed away in 1962, Irv was very supportive to my mother. I will always remember Irv as someone that could be counted on. What says the most for me about Irv was his email address: imagreatguy@att.net. Irv, for me you will always be a great guy.

Irv filled up our hearts with his kindness and deep friendship. Our lives have been so much richer for the blessing of knowing Irv. We had wonderful adventures and so much laughter. We will miss him deeply.
