Shirley was one of the most caring person that had entered my life. She would not let more than a day or two go by without checking on me.
She even offer for me to stay with her when my husband had to go out of town and she didn’t want me to be alone. I miss her, and will always remember her kindness

I’m so sorry we couldn’t be there in person. I’ve been sitting here since the Livestream ended trying to think what I could write because trying to portray a picture of someone in a few sentences is so hard. When I was a little girl I thought that Aunt Shirley should be on TV because she was the most glamourous women I’d ever seen with her coordinating outfits, high heels and blown out hair. The other day I wrote to Marla that I thought she should be in Dallas or Knot’s Landing. But I saw a clip on Instagram yesterday of Joan Rivers getting asked a question about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict in a way that made Israel defense seem negative and she answered in no uncertain terms exactly what she thought without care of the backlash, just loud and opinionated and big. Quintessential Joan Rivers. That’s how I saw Aunt Shirley. She was the ultimate proof that big things come in little packages and if she had something to say, she said it. If something was funny, it wasn’t a tiny giggle, it was a belly laugh. She lived larger than the space that she occupied. She will be missed now that she’s gone.

The first time I met Shirley and the rest of the Lesson Clan was an early Sunday morning of a Packer Game when the Packers still played in Milwaukee. I had driven up from Chicago to Madison for the weekend. Barry was going to go back to Milwaukee on Saturday evening and I convinced him we could party into the night and get up early, like 5:00 and get him home by 7 in time to get to the game with his Dad. And we did! I drove into the rising Sun. Barry slept the whole way. I pulled into the driveway, Barry wakes up. Jumps out of the car, walks up the walk and rings the door bell. The inner door flys open. The screen door stays closed. And Shirley, all 5 feet of her calls out” Son”, and Barry says, ” Mother”, Shirley says, ” Son” and Barry says, “Mother”. Then Shirley throws open the screen door and in absolute joy yells out, ” Your home!” and gives him a huge hug. Never forget that. Shirley loved large her whole family, her husband, Bob, Debbie, Barry and Marla.
