Barbara Soibel

I met Barbara and her husband Larry during “The Big Snow” of 1967. No one could drive anywhere due to the amount of snow that had fallen in a short time; no deliveries were being made, school was cancelled for three weeks. Barb and Larry nevertheless walked- through three feet of newly fallen snow- from their home over to my childhood family home. We had a blast that day and I recall even the adults played Twister. Barb and Larry were not like regular adults I’d met! Barbara and my mom both taught at a Chicago public school and were already friends for many years. I recall many fun times that the Soibel and Harris families spent together. Lisa was the first newborn I think I ever held.

Some of my memories over the years with Mrs. Soibel was when she would come around to meet with my mom, and they would go to dinner or even shopping. If she would come to the house, and my mom was cooking, she was having dinner with us. We would hear stories of my mom and her talking about teachers or what was new in the Chicago public schools. She was around to witness me get married and be there when my first son was born. I remember her always dressed fancy and ready to go, hearing stories of her coming from dancing with friends. She was a true gem and will truly be missed,
