Obituary

Charlene (Shaynee) Lichtenstein (Levant); nee Schwartz, age 90, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 5, 2025. Shaynee was born on July 13, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois. Beloved wife of the late Michael Lichtenstein and the late Richard Levant. Dearest mother of Karen Goodman (Len Jablon) and Mark Levant (Kathy Felten). Dedicated matriarch for Todd (Margaret) Lichtenstein and Beth Alpert and proud bubbie to Alyse and Sophie Lichtenstein and Jack and Cole Alpert. Daughter of the late Helen and Aaron Schwartz, adored sister of the late Hy (late Elsie) Schwartz; the late Lee (Norma) Schwartz and the late Jack (late Beverly) Schwartz, and sister-in-law to the late Gerry (late Rhoda) Levant. Shaynee also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and extended family members. She met and married Richard Levant in 1956, and together they raised their children, Karen and Mark, in Skokie. After Richard’s passing in 1991, Shaynee found companionship once again when she met Michael a few years later. They married in 1998, and their life together was filled with numerous joyful activities, including volunteering at Lutheran General Hospital for many years. They were also very active in Ezra-Habonim, the Niles Township Jewish Congregation. Shaynee served as the chair of adult education on religious services and was the chairman of the high holiday Aliyah committee for many years. Additionally, Shaynee held the position of President of the Willow chapter of ORT for several years. Shaynee’s 38-year career as a dedicated and creative Chicago public school teacher, inspiring students, brought her much joy; and due to social media, she was able to connect and communicate with former students. She was also a mentor for student teachers through Northeastern University. Shaynee will always be remembered the way she inspired those around her and enriched their lives with her wisdom, outlook on life and the love she showed for so many. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ezra Habonim, the Niles Township Jewish Congregation, www.ehnt.org, or the National Kidney Foundation, www.kidney.org.
