Obituary
Howard is survived by his childhood sweetheart and loving wife, Joan, of 55 years, daughter of the late Estelle and Bernard Shipin and by his loving children, Lauren (Simon) Leibovich and Lindsey (Chris) Vischer and his grandchildren Alexis, Lucas and Zachary. Howard was predeceased by his sister Marci Weinshenker and is survived by her husband Ed and by his brother Larry (Tammy) Edelman, as well as other extended family and friends.
Devotion to his family was Howard’s guiding light. He was an anchor, supporting Joan in raising their children and in every aspect of their marriage. He was deeply involved in all areas of his children’s and grandchildren’s lives, sharing his wisdom, supporting their interests and rooting them on in countless sporting events.
Growing up, Howard was a star athlete who led his school and fraternity teams to championships as the point guard, shortstop and quarterback. Later, he was accomplished in his distinguished career over five decades, beginning with Centre Properties and rising to EVP with Heitman.
Howard touched the lives of many with a gregarious, outgoing nature. He was kind, thoughtful and was known for always being able to light up a room with his infectious smile and sense of humor. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and for his profound impact on the lives of everyone that knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.

Howard and I became friends when we worked at Heitman in the 1970’s. His sense of humor, patience and intelligence were always on view. He was a mensch, My sympathies and condolences to Joanie and your family. Celebrate today and every day that you had him for as long as you did.

Maybe we were 10 years old, that summer the Edelmans got a pool. It wasn’t a built-in, like the ones pictured in movie star magazines-this was Jeffrey Manor, after all. Nevertheless, it was a good sized stand-up one that probably took forever to fill with a garden hose. Howie and a couple of the other kids would bike to my house on Euclid late mornings and I would join them. Sometimes we rode to Chanenson’s for bottles of cold soda pop from the machine there. Sometimes we ventured through the viaduct to South Shore. A few times, we made it all the way to Jackson Park. The best days included hours in Howie’s pool-laughing, splashing, being kids together. Howie and I were buddies. He was raucous and smiley and great fun to be with. And it was ok with him to hang out with a girl. As time passed we went our separate ways. But I always remembered those bike rides, the Edelmans’ back yard and Howie-my first boy-friend. Rest in peace, Howie.

So sorry to hear this news…Howard was one of my favorite Heitman colleagues, he was super smart but also super fun…the attached pic is Howard ‘sampling’ the bed in a medical office building sleep study room, during a due diligence tour…that smile and gregarious nature shines through in this pic
Love you Howard

I have so many fun memories of being with Howie and our “group” back in HS. He was always smiling. One particular memory was when Howie baited me when singing the Beatles song , “little child,” I wish Joan and his family only sweet memories of this wonderful man.

So say that Norm and I will miss seeing and serving and visiting with Howard at the Dog Out would be be an understatement.
Howard, with his big smile and laugh, always made our day brighter. He was one of the “good guys”… a gentleman and a mensch.
We shared many conversations about families, dogs and food over the years. I was always impressed, and told him so, that he would do his Sudoku puzzles in pen…. Howard, I personally enjoyed every moment you were at the store… there is a void there, and in my heart.
To the Family- our deepest condolences.

I fondly remember my friend. I hired him at B.L,Rosenberg and Company, then moved him the Centre Properties and after proving himself he was moved to Heitman Financial, where he flourished. I don’t believe anyone could say a bad word about him. Just a wonderful man!!!

My friendship started when I was a summer intern at Heitman and got to be Howard’s driver when he tore his hamstring playing basketball. Then I worked with Howard for 6 years.. He was my boss, friend, mentor and father figure. I learned everything from him. I was blessed to stay friends with him since then. And in the past few months I came home to meet him at Country Kitchen in HP . I will miss his friendship. My prayers to Joan, the girls and grandkids. He spoke with such love for all of you.
