Obituary
Barbara grew up in Norfolk, Virginia, the devoted younger daughter of Morris (z’’l) and Sylvia (z’’l) Batleman. She went to Old Dominion University in Norfolk where she earned her B.S. She and Morris moved to Chicago where she taught typing and business skills at Madonna High School while Morris earned his law degree. She made lifelong friends at her job, which brought her joy and comfort, but she was content to leave her teaching job to raise her children.
Barbara loved being a parent and had perfect attendance at school and athletic events. Through holidays and milestone celebrations, she made a joyful Jewish home; family was truly her source of pride and joy. After her kids were teenagers, Barbara went back to work, spending most of the rest of career in public relations at the Maine-Niles Association of Special Recreation. After she retired, she volunteered at Read to Learn, helping adults learn English.
Barbara’s favorite times were always with family from yearly summer trips to Virginia Beach to Thanksgivings spent with all the generations around the table. She loved to read and crochet, making beautiful blankets for so many people she loved. Her favorite television show was I Love Lucy and she also enjoyed warm-weather vacations in the Caribbean and Mexico. Funeral services will be held on Monday December 1 at 2:30 pm at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 W Rand Rd., Arlington Heights, IL 60004. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Ark Chicago (https://arkchicago.org/). The first time I met Barbara, I was with my son, Greg, who had been working in his business, Jaffe Films 🎥 (named for my maiden name, Jaffe). Barbara was at her office, and I really enjoyed meeting her that day. She reminded me of Greg in her great love and respect for disabled children and adults, as they worked together for The Special Olympics (similar to how I worked at a Massachusetts school for adults with intellectual disabilities). So, I recognized immediately that Barbara was a very caring and loving person, and I was so happy that she had become mother-in-law to my youngest son, Jonathan, and grandmother to his and Stephanie’s children! Barbara’s life was a blessing to so many people!

Barbara was my very first friend in Illinois. On the very day we moved into our home in Palatine, she and Stephanie walked all the way around the block to greet us—even though we were already back-door neighbors. We became fast friends from that moment on.
Throughout the years we fostered children, Barbara stood by my side and was my fiercest ally. During our PTA days at the kids’ school, we also managed to get into a bit of harmless mischief together—memories I will always treasure.
Barbara was the truest friend, steadfast and loving, and she will be missed beyond words. I am sending all my love to Morris, Stephanie, Matthew, and everyone whose life she touched. The photo attached was taken at my daughter’s wedding in 2009—a reminder of a friendship that blessed my life for nearly 35 years.

Of course my favorite memory is taking a right turn out of MNASR onto Dempster and we approached the first stop light . I remember Barbara and I starting our discussion on both Jon and Stephanie being single and maybe we should set them up. I (personally) just never knew it would turn into something as it did and I remember each time Barbara and I got together, or talked on the phone , we were each trying to find out any additional information on the status of the relationship .from one another. But Jon and Stephanie were pretty tight lipped .
Anyways, Barbara was sooooo happy for the relationship and I was too. Engagement, marriage , house and kids , she was very happy , and I am glad she got to experience most every mother’s dream for their daughter and family .

Barbara has been family to me for as long as she has been married to my cousin Morris. I always enjoyed talking to her when we would see each other at special family celebrations through the years. I’m so glad I was able to see her in June of 2024 at one of the family celebrations. She will be missed!

I remember Barbara from her work with Greg in special needs and then followed the stories as they introduced Jon and Stephanie. I also enjoyed getting the regular photos of Barbara and Morris spending time with Lindsey and Scott, whom I know they cherished deeply. Her memory will indeed be a blessing to me.

I met Barb (as our group called her) in 1980 teaching at Madonna High School. She left to become a full-time mother to Matthew, but a group of us have stayed in touch ever since. We have celebrated and commemorated marriages , births, deaths of loved ones and now the death of one of our own.
I will remember Barbara as an upbeat, funny, talented, and loyal friend. I will miss her tremendously.
My deepest condolences to Morris, Matthew, Amanda, Isaac, Stephanie, Jon, Lindsey and little Scott. May her memory be for a blessing.
