Sheldon Cohen

I was blessed to know Sheldon since I was a very young girl as a very close family friend. I always cherished a bond we had having almost the same name…he was Sheldon and I was Shelly Cohen. What I remember most about Sheldon was his sense of humor that always made me laugh, but most of all I will always cherish the memories in the kitchen making his recipe for the best Cabbage Soup! I looked up to him for all he did for his family and friends. My thoughts and prayers to his children he loved so much Amy and Adam.

I met Sheldon in 1956 when he and my sister, Betty, were on their way to Fort Campbell, Kentucky for his first Army assignment. When they stopped in Lincoln, Nebraska you’d think the king was coming. My mom had to make a each pie just for him. My mom never made fruit pies only lemon or chocolate meringue. But Sheldon loved peach pie, so he got one. He knew the importance of eating fresh fruit. He especially loved peaches, plums and nectarines. Perhaps that may have contributed to his longevity. I spent many school summer vacations visiting the Cohens in Chicago. Sheldon was a great host and took me to some really cool places like The Museum of Science and Industry. I remember the replica of a heart and how Sheldon explained blood circulation. That was awesome. He was an all around awesome person and will be greatly missed by those who were touched by his life. Thank you Sheldon for being you,

This picture was taken about 35 years ago. It is of a present I received from my Uncle Sheldon. He and my Aunt Betty were both like grandparents to me and were always so generous and hospitable. I appreciate everything they ever did. Sheldon and I also shared the love of writing which Earnest Hemmingway calls an obsession, which is very true and may be one of the reasons Sheldon lived a long life. Sheldon was a good man, and I admired him as a person, which isn’t something I can say about most men I know. I hope he was comforted in his last moments and that the angels came to carry him home.

Sheldon was the perfect example of what a husband and father should be. I will always remember his great sense of humor and how much he loved my sister. I am so glad that he was able to spend his final years with Paul and that now he and Betty are together again.
