Obituary
Shirley Ann Sass Meyer, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, great aunt, cousin and dear friend passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at the age of 92 on June 5, 2025. A devoted wife of 45 years of the late Richard Meyer, she is survived by her two loving children: daughter Terri Meyer of Sonoma, Calif. and son Michael (Deborah) Meyer of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; cherished grandmother of Megan (Dustin) Truett and Lauren (David) Raschen; sister of the late Frank (Mary) Sass; sister-in-law of the late Sheldon (Rae) Meyer and the late Robert (Elly) Meyer; and treasured aunt of Susan (Mark) Messersmith, Scott (Robyn) Meyer, Jeff (Trish) Meyer, John Meyer, Kathy Meyer, Nancy Sass and Martin Sass. Shirley was born and raised in Springfield, Mo., daughter of the late Maurice and Sarah Sass, founders of the M.J. Sass Jewelry Company-a thriving, well-known enterprise with four stores in southwest Missouri. Shirley grew up with a love of retail, and later in her life achieved great success selling cosmetics at Jacobson’s Department Store in Battle Creek, Mich., where she was the only employee at that time to sell more than $100,000 in merchandise. Shirley graduated from Springfield’s Greenwood High School and continued her studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 2006, Shirley moved back to her hometown of Springfield where she spent the remainder of her life, and even reunited with a group of Greenwood High classmates from her childhood. Shirley’s remarkable life will be celebrated at a memorial service Tuesday, June 10, at Shalom Memorial Park in Arlington Heights, Ill. To view the service online or leave a condolence message, please visit www.shalommemorial.org. The family would like to thank the dedicated and caring staff of Sacred Rose Healthcare-especially Chris Brown- and the team at Compassus Hospice for their compassionate care in Shirley’s final days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Compassus Hospice, www.compassus.com/locations/missouri/springfield, Springfield, Mo.
