Obituary

Dr. Seymour B. Goren, age 91, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2025. Beloved husband of Cynthia (née Levin) for 67 wonderful years, loving father of William (Dr. Susan Gerber), Dr. Matthew (Molly Mosley), and Nancy (Alan) Shaw; cherished “Poppa” of Maeli (Bradley) Goren-Wilson, Ben Goren, Jacob Shaw, Yael Shaw, and Maya Goren, and great-grandfather of Hazel Goren-Wilson.

Dr. Goren graduated from the University of Rochester and the University of Chicago School of Medicine, where he completed his residency and fellowship in Ophthalmology. In 1965, after serving as Captain in the United States Army, Dr. Goren entered private practice and became an attending physician at Northwestern University and Children’s Memorial Hospital. He later joined the faculty of Northwestern University Medical School as Assistant Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology.

Dr. Goren lectured internationally and authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals. He was a scientific referee for the American Journal of Ophthalmology and the A.M.A. Archives of Ophthalmology. He was included in Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who in America.

Dr. Goren was an active member of numerous medical societies, including the Chicago Ophthalmological Society (vice-president, chairman of clinical conference), Chicago Medical Society (counselor, ethics committee), Society of the Sigma Xi (honorary society for research in science), American Academy of Ophthalmology, American College of Surgeons, Royal Society of Medicine, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Pan American Association of Ophthalmology, and Research to Prevent Blindness.

Having designed his family’s vacation home in Wisconsin, Dr. Goren treasured his time there as well as the many visits to Sanibel Island with his beloved family.

He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Memorial donations in his honor may be made to: Research to Prevent Blindness, www.rpbusa.org or the Anti-Defamation League ,www.adl.org.
