Obituary

Norman Gilbert (“Gibby”) Levin, age 97. Everyone loved “Gibby”. After graduating from Hyde Park High School, he obtained his accounting degree from Roosevelt University. Shortly thereafter, he was a founding partner of Wolin-Levin Inc., which became a Hyde Park-based real estate management institution where he worked into his 90s. He enjoyed the Blackhawks, Bears, symphony, opera, Wolfy’s and Manny’s Deli. Gibby was also a founding chair of the Jewish Federation Management Corporation (JFMC), part of the Jewish United Fund (JUF), and a board member of Roosevelt University. He was happily married to Shulamith (“Shellie”) for 59 years. Together they traveled the world, many times with the whole extended family in tow. Pre-deceased were his parents William and Sarah (Pinckovitch), brothers Harold, Arthur and sister Lillian (Schaffner). Loving father to Robert (Linda), the late Barbara (Marc) Goldberg, and Julie (David) Freireich. He was loved by his six grandchildren, Jessica (Danny), Adina (Ismael), Aliza (Chelsea), Evan, Andrew, Hannah and great-grandchildren, Bradley, Asher, Scarlett, Cooper and Aleix. He will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jewish United Fund, www.juf.org. Chapel service Sunday, Nov. 2, 10 AM at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 W. Rand Rd, Arlington Heights. Interment to follow at Shalom Memorial Park. Will never forget Uncle Gibby’s sparkling eyes and kindness. We shared many meals, along with Shellie and my mom, Lil, during which he charmed us and whoever was waiting on us. I am thankful to have had the honor of serving him his favorite side dish, grilled onions, at our holday celebrations. Thank you Uncle Gibby for everything you did for us – especially my mom. We are grateful. You are missed.

Gibbie was loved by his niece Andrea Schaffner, daughter of Gibbie’s sister Lillian. He helped his sister Lillian resettle in Chicago, gave her a job at his company, drove her to work every day, and looked after her. Andrea loved Uncle Gibbie, and I got to know and admire him. A wonderful person.

Gibby was always welcoming, with a “twinkle” in his eye. He made myself and our mom feel special and loved. I always enjoyed our holiday phone conversations as well. He was especially proud of his family and their accomplishments.
