Obituary
Ann Scher, 86, née Garrison, beloved wife of the late Paul Lawrence Scher, happily married for 47 years, and the late Earl Murray Rubin, married for 10 wonderful years; loving mother of Susan (Noel) Elfant and Laura Brown; cherished Nonny of Eleanor and Julia Brown, Rachel (Ariel Campagne), Nate and Griffin Elfant. Ann was a steady presence in the lives of her husbands, her daughters, her son-in-law, and her grandchildren-consistently offering guidance, advice, and, of course, cooking tips. Ann was a true matriarch who with her strong character brought everyone together around her table and home. Ann developed strength and resilience through life’s challenges. She met her first husband Earl through the Oak Park Temple sisterhood, with her aunt and future sister-in-law conspiring to make the introduction. Tragically, Earl passed away at the age of 33 from a congenital heart defect, leaving Ann widowed at age 29. The Garrison and Rubin extended families in Oak Park and River Forest provided needed love and support to Ann and her two young girls in the wake of this tremendous loss. Ann met her second husband Paul, blind since birth, on what she called the “ultimate blind date”. Ann was a devoted wife to both of her husbands, and she expressed gratitude in having married two men each of whom she considered her best friend, both men having a unique sense of humor. Ann showed her love through her hospitality, her generosity, and creating a home where family and friends felt welcomed, both at the family house in River Forest and later at their condo in the city. She had a gift for hosting, setting a perfect table and preparing gourmet meals that were the expression of her care. Ann had a sharp and quick mind, evidenced by her voracious reading and her skilled game play including Mahjong, Bridge, crosswords, and board games. Professionally, she was a capable businessperson. With her best friend, she developed a catering business-Sherri-Anne Delicacies-and later translated those skills to her roles as catering manager at Chicago hotels and as administrator at Oak Park Temple. After her working career, Ann continued to contribute to her community with volunteer work at the Lakeview Food Pantry, Access Living, and Anixter Center. Throughout her life Ann connected generations, weaving together family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and care and a trove of family recipes. Funeral service Friday October, 17, 2025, 10:00 AM at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home 1700 W. Rand Road, Arlington Heights. Interment following at Shalom Memorial Park.
