I have such respect and admiration for Dan. He showed me such kindness and respect when I was a very junior pediatric intensivist and researcher. While I never had the privilege of practicing alongside him, I did benefit from his wisdom, his curiosity, and his generosity of spirit! He will be missed greatly.

I only heard of the passing of my my my most esteemed mentor today. I apologize for missing services and all remembrances. In the age of embellishment, it is not exaggeration that Dan was a pioneer and a giant in the field of pediatric critical care. From the day that i met him when i was a 4th year medical student, he taught me what excellence meant. He taught me that every detail mattered, and that is why we can send so many children home and not bury them. He taught me that what i did was the most important memory for that patient and that family, and that every word mattered. Dan should be celebrated with Medals of Freedom and parades, but he won’t be. But he and his family will know that a generation of physicians and public health leaders are from his line, and I for one would not have been able to do what i did without his mentorship and leadership. His loss is tragic for the world, and i hope and pray that his impact and legacy is remembered, cherished, and modeled for the future.

Dan was a “father” to his fellows. He cared not only about training us to be excellent pediatric Intensivists. He made sure that we are doing well outside of the four walls of the unit. We had picnics that bonded the fellows beyond training years. I asked why do you care more than you should.? He said “A happy fellow is a good fellow.” Thank you, Dan.

Dear Dan and Judi,
How terribly shocked and saddened I was to hear of this news. There is another star in heaven. Dan was always such a great friend, confidant and mentor for many, many years. His smile and sense of humor were always a delight. His wisdom, always cherished. My heart and best wishes to all of his loving – and large – family!
in sympathy,
Heidi

Dan. Your example, your teaching, and your words of wisdom cannot be equaled. I am immensely saddened by your passing. But you live on in those that you taught.

I remember seeing Dan at most Friday eve services on zoom in Hanover and singing together. I especially remember enjoying ice cream pints from Sanctuary that he and Judi delivered to me and my family. Miss you Dan! May your memory be for a blessing. We will say kaddish for you in the community on Shabbat for the next 11 months.
