Obituary

Ellen Ziskind (née Weiss), 72, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her loving family. Ellen was the beloved wife and best friend of Burt for 40 wonderful years. Together they built a life centered on love, family, friendship, and unwavering devotion to one another. She was the cherished mother of Lauren Ziskind (Sean Ruwart) of Chicago, Alex (Neal) LaRoia of Hinsdale, and Aaron Ziskind of Palatine, and the proud and devoted Grammy to her six grandchildren: Dev, Rosie, Paul, Vic, Mira, and Rahm. Ellen was the loving sister of Robin Hirsch and the late Jordan Weiss, and the devoted daughter of the late Victor and Mildred Weiss. She is survived by her nephews, their families, and many extended family members. After graduating from the University of Iowa in 1976, she dedicated her career to working as a pharmacist; first at the former Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, and later for Mark Drug – Strathmore and Walgreens Pharmacies in the northwest suburbs. Known for her remarkable memory, Ellen never forgot a name, a face, a birthday, or an anniversary. She had an extraordinary gift for making people feel remembered and valued. She nurtured lifelong friendships that spanned decades and was often the person who kept family and friends connected. Ellen found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She was an avid reader, enthusiastic puzzler, dedicated mahjong player, and passionate pickleball player – all of which she played regularly while defending cancer for the past six+ years. Above all, Ellen will be remembered for her kindness, loyalty, and boundless love for her family and friends. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org or The Ark, www.arkchicago.org. Chapel service, Tuesday, June 23, 2026; 10 AM at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home 1700 W. Rand Road, Arlington Heights. Interment to follow at Shalom Memorial Park. For a link to view the service, shiva information and to leave condolences: www.shalommemorial.org or (847) 255-3520.
