Obituary

Mary T. Wernick (nee Sharp), 86, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2026. Beloved wife and best friend of Allan for 57 wonderful years; loving mother of Daniel (Nicole), Jeremy (Mary), Dina (Ethan) Stambler and Benjamin (Christine Lee); cherished grandma of Jack, Sam, Rachel, Sofia, Gabriel, Ezra, Leah and Jillian; much loved sister of Catherine (Frank) King; adored aunt, great aunt and friend of many. Mary was a registered nurse when she met Allan at the hospital in Chicago where he was a psychologist. They married and began building their life together, raising their four children first in Chicago, then Highland Park, before eventually making their home in Buffalo Grove. Caring for others was at the heart of who Mary was. She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, while also continuing her career as a nurse. She took great pride in her work and cared for others for more than 50 years, including many years at the VA in North Chicago. Even while raising four children and managing a busy household, Mary always found a way to give to others and make those around her feel cared for. After retirement, Mary enjoyed filling her days with things that kept her active and happy. She became an avid reader of mystery novels, enjoyed water aerobics and water volleyball, and even learned to play golf and pickleball. She and Allan loved traveling together. One of their most memorable adventures was taking a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon, but their favorite journeys were often the simplest ones-traveling to spend time with their children and grandchildren. Family truly meant everything to Mary. She was happiest surrounded by the people she loved, and becoming a grandma was one of the greatest joys of her life. She treasured every visit, every conversation and every moment with her grandchildren. Mary lived a life centered around love, family and caring for others. She will be deeply missed by Allan, her children and grandchildren, her extended family and the many people whose lives she touched throughout the years. Her memory will live on in the countless lives she made better simply by being Mary. Memorial donations in Mary’s name may be made to The ARK Chicago, www.arkchicago.org.
