Obituary
Edith “Edie” Spear, 97, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2026. Beloved wife of the late Alex for nearly 60 wonderful years; loving mother of Leah, Stephen (Sarah), Mika and Laura (Michael); cherished grandmother of Daniel (Stephanie), Amy (Phil), Talia, Michael, Zachary, Leah, Chezi (partner Dikla), Yael, Julia (fiancé Zach), Ariel, Brandon (Diana) and Ryan (partner Kyle); much-loved great-grandmother of Leo, Mili, James, Wolf, Conrad, Savanna and Cooper; She was also a treasured aunt, great-aunt and friend to many. Born and raised in Chicago. She met her beloved Alex in Union Pier, Michigan, where their love story began. They married following Edie’s High School graduation. Edie believed that women could achieve as much as they dared to dream, and she taught that lesson by example. A mathematics graduate of Roosevelt University, she began her career working on plans for the nuclear reactor that powered the Nautilus. After devoting 22 years to raising her family, she returned to the workforce as a systems analyst. Outside of work, she pursued her passion for international folk dancing, leading a weekly dance group in Oak Park for more than 40 years; performing and teaching at workshops, and sharing her passion for music and dance with countless others.. She also found joy in cooking, tending to her flowers and garden, listening to opera, and traveling the world. Union Pier always held a special place in her heart. Wanting to share that treasured part of their lives with their family, Edie and Al purchased a home in Union Pier that became the setting for many wonderful family gatherings. The property remains in the family today, continuing the legacy of memories they created together. Edie was a devoted wife and mother, who made balancing family, career and her many interests look easy. She also found great joy in becoming a grandmother and great-grandmother. Her love for her family, her many passions and the memories she created with those around her will live on for generations. Edie will be remembered for the example she set, the life she lived, and the many people whose lives she touched Memorial donations in Edie’s name may be made to: Magen David Adom, www.mdais.org/en/donation.
