Obituary

Carol J. Stone, 66, née Feldman, loving mother of Rachel and Sarah Stone; dear sister of Avrohom (Yehudis) and Jeff Feldman; cherished lifelong friend of Ann Oliff; Carol was an aunt of 12, great-aunt of 30, and a devoted friend to many.

Carol was born on May 3rd, 1959, to Sharon and Norman Feldman in Chicago, Illinois. She attended Niles East high school in 1977, where she performed on the poms team and discovered her love of dance. After graduating, she attended Southern Illinois University, where she created a specialized major in Organizational Development.

She went on to live and work in Chicago, where she married David Stone and ensured that her daughters, Rachel and Sarah Stone, would follow whatever passion they desired. After many evenings spent watching her daughters in ballet class, Carol became a champion of the Chicago dance world; chairing events and galas for The Joffrey Ballet and loudly cheering for her favorite performers from her season ticket seats. Carol took her duties as a backstage mom just as seriously, and, once, even performed with the Joffrey Ballet company herself: appearing onstage as a background extra during a run of Romeo and Juliet.

Carol was also a proud graduate of the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration, where she received a Master’s degree in Social Work. She completed this degree while balancing parenting two children in middle and high school, and embraced the opportunity to serve trauma survivors and others in uniquely challenging situations. She worked closely with Resilience, a non-profit dedicated to working with sexual assault survivors, and later took on a roster of her own clients as a therapist.

She cared deeply, laughed often, loved musicals, hated injustice (both large and small-scale), loved Shawn Colvin and James Taylor, read voraciously, built traditions, loved poetry, kept her nails done, and could always be counted on to listen.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Carol’s honor may be made to Resilience, www.ourresilience.org. Chapel service Sunday, May 3, 2026, 10:00 AM at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 W.
