Obituary
Born in Chicago and raised in Virginia, Vicki formed lifelong friendships early on that remained a steady source of love and laughter throughout her life. She later returned to Chicago as a devoted single mother, earning her master’s degree in social work from the University of Illinois at Chicago. For more than forty years as a clinical social worker, Vicki touched countless lives through her work in residential treatment facilities, schools, camps, and private practice. Her warmth, down-to-earth wisdom, and deep compassion made her both a trusted professional and a beloved confidante.
Beyond her work, Vicki delighted in the pleasures of living well. She was a world traveler, a music lover, and a glass-half-full oenophile. She was happiest surrounded by friends and family-sharing a glass of wine on her balcony or a far-flung beach, singing her heart out at karaoke or in a vocal recital, and dancing to live music whenever the chance arose.
Vicki was the beloved daughter of Nancy and the late Dr. Robert Bloom; the devoted mother of Jimi Shaffer; the cherished grandmother of Dominick Shaffer; and the loving companion of Paul Matzerath. She was a dear sister to Michael (Erin) Bloom, Russell Bloom (Terri Mason), and David (Sarah) Bloom. Nicknamed “AV,” she was also a doting aunt and joyful co-conspirator to Matthew (Danielle), Kennedy (Trevor Unger), Allison, and Jacob Bloom (Olivia Caruso), Naomi (Patrick) Hohman, and Joseph Bloom (Victoria Sills). A dear niece to her aunts and uncles, Vicki was also the favorite among her many cousins.

Vicki and I shared 9 years together. Whether it was taking walks during sessions on sunny days or talking through trauma. She was always there for me as an amazing therapist. I think I’ll miss you too much.

I became a client of Vicki’s in 2020 during a very difficult time. Vicki helped me come back to myself through her wisdom, patience, and support. Talking to her felt like talking to a friend, and I’m so grateful to have met her.

Dear Vicki,
Our connection was immediate. Even though it has only been 15 years, I feel as though I have known you all my life. We maintained a nurturing professional connection while growing a deep, lasting friendship.
Whether we talked about our common interest in mental health of youth and families, or signed up for a yoga class, joined each other’s gathering, or shared a quiet dinner—time always went by too fast, and our conversation never stopped. You are charismatic, strong, caring, with a laugh that is larger than life.
Thank you for sharing your journey with me. I will always treasure our memories and will always love you.

Being Vicki‘s neighbor and friend was quite the honor. One of my favorite things when walking in the hallway to my unit, was bumping into Vicki. We would talk and catch up for what felt like hours. Despite all of the challenges she was going through. She always had a smile on her face and great stories to tell. I will cherish those times and miss Vicki dearly.
