Obituary

Geraldine Ann “Gerry” (Prince) Kurtz, 92, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2026. Above all else, Gerry was a kind, loving, and joyous person who truly loved life. She was full of energy and generosity, and she gave endlessly to her family and to those around her. Gerry’s warmth and light filled every room she entered, and to know her was to love her. Gerry was born in Indianapolis on August 27, 1933, to the late Nathan Prince and Dora (Levy) Prince, and was the cherished younger sister of the late Irving Prince. She attended Shortridge High School, where she played the trumpet in the school band, and later earned her bachelor’s degree in Speech Pathology from Indiana University. She devoted her professional life to serving elementary-aged students in the Indianapolis Public School System and at the Hasten Hebrew Academy of Indianapolis, where she was known for her patience, creativity, and care. In addition to her work in education, Gerry managed her husband’s medical office, studied Interior Design and pursued advertising and promotional work as a creative hobby business, blending her organizational abilities with her artistic talents. An artist, collector, and creative spirit at heart, Gerry loved surrounding herself with beauty and meaning. She delighted in collecting antiques and art, and she was an avid collector of cookbooks and magazines, amassing a collection of more than 3,000. She found great joy in cooking and lovingly compiled a family cookbook so that her recipes and traditions could be shared for generations to come. Gerry was married to her beloved husband, Richard Kurtz, MD in the summer of 1957. Her greatest joy was her family, and she dedicated her life to caring for her husband, three children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with unwavering love and devotion. Gerry is survived by her children, Lynda Kurtz Canel (Scott), Mary Beth Kurtz-Seiden (Alan), and Henry Steven Kurtz; her grandchildren, Jonathan Canel (Shiran) and Lindsey Canel; and her great-grandchildren, Eliana and Amalia Canel. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, and her dear husband, Richard. Services will be held at Congregation Sukkat Shalom in Wilmette, Illinois, on Wednesday, February 11, 2026 at 11:00 am, with graveside service at 1:00 pm at Shalom Memorial Park in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Memorial contributions may be made to Keshet, 610 Academy Drive, Northbrook, Illinois 60062, or at keshet.org.
