Obituary
Born on July 1, 1945, in Casablanca, Morocco, Michel lived a life defined by joy, creativity, and connection. From France to Chicago, Mexico, Florida, and California, every place he called home was brighter because he was in it. No matter where he lived, he created community, making friends feel like family and family feel endlessly cherished.
Michel was a true artist in every sense. In his youth, he played in a band, sharing his love of music with the world. By trade, he was a talented hairstylist, but his real craft was creating joy. With a guitar in hand and a joke ready in three languages, French, English, and Spanish, he had a rare gift for making everyone feel welcome, seen, and at home. His warmth was magnetic; his laughter unforgettable.
He was a loving husband to his wife, Gabriela; the beloved father of David, Laurence, Jonathan, and Tohm; and a proud and adoring grandfather to Julien, Amelie, and Remi. He was also a cherished brother of Bruno, Joss, Charles, and Laurice. Gabriela shared that throughout their life together, they always had fun, he was always happy, always made her laugh, and was a truly noble man.
To his children, he was their greatest champion, their compass, their protector, their biggest supporter, and their best friend. Even in illness, he shielded those he loved from pain, continuing to sing and play guitar, filling their hearts with comfort and strength. His energy made it easy to forget the passage of time.
Michel did not simply move through life; he illuminated it. He leaves behind a legacy of music, humor, generosity, and unconditional love. The sunshine he brought into this world will live on in every song, every laugh, and every gathering where someone picks up a guitar and begins to sing.

I don’t remember him very well. I saw him once or twice. I was a classmate of his daughter at La Fontaine school in the 1980s. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, I remembered her, and a quick Google search led me to this page. I’m so sorry; I know this pain. My condolences to Laurence and her entire family.

In Loving Memory of Papa Ifergan
Today, the world feels a little dimmer, but the heavens are certainly brighter. To a man who didn’t just walk through life—he illuminated it.
Papa Ifergan was the definition of sunshine. He had the rare, God-given gift of lifting the spirits of everyone he touched, turning ordinary moments into celebrations. I will never forget the joy of hearing him sing at my 50th birthday; his voice wasn’t just music, it was a reflection of his soul—warm, generous, and full of life.
Papa Ifergan, you will be more than missed—you will be remembered in every sunrise and every melody. Thank you for the sunshine you brought in many lives. May you rest in eternal peace, singing with the angels.

Michel, You were family to us. Your humor, kindness, and warmth helped carry us through some of our hardest days. You had a beautiful way of lifting our hearts, even in the presence of illness and loss. Now that you are gone too, my heart believes you and Joe found each other again, and you both are reunited now, free from pain, watching over us with love.
I will miss you forever.

I will never forget his great sense of humor, he always saw the good side of difficult situations. His music, the way to improvise with his songs, his creativity and talent. Then I had the pleasure of meeting his beautiful wife and I understood why he was so happy, a beautiful couple with a very beautiful family and all with a unique talent. Jonh Michel will live in our hearts with that smile and his wise words .
