Obituary
Three children-Kelly Ryan (Chris), Karen Grelyak (Todd), and Howard Templer (Jessica)-had the privilege of calling this extraordinary man Dad. Larry was also a devoted stepfather to Rachael Mangoubi (Marc), Aimee Halstuk, and Aaron Halstuk, all of whom loved him dearly.
Larry is survived by his eight beloved grandchildren: Vanessa, Gavin, Hannah, Benji, AJ, Micah, Pheep, and Romy. Each of them adored their Grandpa Larry, and he cherished every one of them.
Larry and his beloved wife, Marla, shared 29 wonderful years of marriage built on love, unwavering support, and laughter, with family always at the center of their lives together. They treasured not only their close-knit family but also the many deep and lasting friendships they cultivated over the years. His absence will be felt profoundly by all who knew and loved him.
Larry had a lifelong passion for the Chicago White Sox. He delighted family and friends with his remarkable knowledge of the team’s history, statistics, and countless memorable stories. One of his greatest joys was traveling with his son, Howie, to visit Major League ballparks across the country, creating cherished memories together. Larry was also an avid lover of theater and film. Over the years, he attended hundreds of live performances and carefully saved every Playbill-a testament to the joy he found in the arts.
Larry graduated cum laude from Northwestern University School of Law in 1973. He began his legal career clerking for Judge Glenn Seidenfeld of the Illinois Appellate Court in Lake County before joining the law firm of Friedman and Coven. He later co-founded Jolivette and Templer, where he practiced law until his retirement on his 67th birthday.
Throughout his distinguished legal career, Larry was deeply committed to professionalism and ethics in the practice of law. He served as an active member of the Illinois State Bar Association, the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism, the Committee on Professional Conduct, and the Professional Ethics Committee. He also served as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association, among many other professional accomplishments. His integrity, wisdom, and dedication earned him the respect of colleagues throughout the legal community.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Larry’s memory to Chicago White Sox Charities, www.mlb.com/whitesox/charities.
