Obituary

Robert Katz, 79, adored son of the late Sol and Gertrude Katz; beloved husband of Susan Katz, née Schwartz, happily married for 57 wonderful years; loving father of Stephanie Erin (Erik Glover) Cohen, Jeffrey Scott (Tara) Katz, and Lisa Anne Katz; cherished Grandpa of Dylan and Logan Glover and Charles and Miles Katz; dear brother of Steve (Mardel) Katz; much loved uncle of Jamie Wolfe and Jill (Craig) Cotton, and great-uncle of Madeline Cotton. Robert was a treasured cousin and friend to many. Robert, or “Bobby” as his family called him, was born in 1946 in Chicago. From the beginning, alongside his brother Steve, he carried the warmth and spirit that his loved ones cherished. Over seventy-nine years, that spirit never dimmed.

Robert studied architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He loved architecture, and his memory lives on, quite literally, in the buildings he designed and created, and in RKtects, the work that bore his name. In all of his travels, locally and across oceans, he and Susan always made sure to take in the nearby historical and architectural sites. He was a true Chicago sports fan. The Bears, the Bulls, the Cubs and the Blackhawks: he cheered them all, in good seasons and lean ones. He rooted even more passionately for his own children and grandchildren. He loved watching Jeff’s hockey tournaments, traveling near and far to be there. He did the same for Stephanie’s figure skating, and he was there for Lisa whenever she needed him. Later, he loved nothing more than going to his grandchildren’s games, meets, races, and performances, cheering them on from the sidelines.

Robert was happiest at home. When he did travel, it was for the family vacations he loved, piling everyone into the car and driving to Walt Disney World, always finding a reason to extend the trip just a little longer. At the heart of Robert’s life was his wife, Susan. Theirs was a close marriage and partnership of more than fifty-seven years. They built a home and a life rooted in devotion to one another. Everything Robert treasured grew out of that love.

Robert’s love for his children was the great work of his life. His joy and pride rested in who they became and in everything they achieved. When his grandchildren arrived – Dylan, Logan, Charie, and Miles – that pride only deepened. Being Grandpa brought him a happiness that lit him from the inside.

Robert Katz was a man who loved deeply, built lasting things, and found his greatest joy in the people around him. While his friends and family grieve, they take solace in the legacy he left behind.
