Gail Ellis

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gail Isabell Ellis, née Mandell, who passed away on July 15, 2026 at the age of 86.

Born on February 27, 1940 in Chicago, Gail was the beloved daughter of Ruth and John Mandell. She grew up on the Albany Park neighborhood and attended Von Steuben High School, skipping two grades and graduating at the age of 16. Gail married Stewart Miles Ellis, also from Chicago. They began their family in Chicago in 1960 before moving to Des Plaines in 1965. They later spent 26 years in Arlington Heights and in 2004 made their home in Sun City Huntley and met many new friends.

Gail was a devoted daughter, mother, grandmother and later great-grandmother. She enjoyed countless hours with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, while building many friendships at the bridge and mahjongg tables. She loved her cats, cooking and crocheting. Gail was respected by all who knew her for her independent spirit, resilience, and enduring loyalty.

Gail is survived by her beloved children Michael (the late Cyndi) Ellis, Sherryl (Jim) Heinz and Eden Ellis; her grandchildren Jimmy (Sahra), Steven (Taryn), Christopher and Nicholas; great-grandchildren Calista, Violet, Willow, Myles, Lucy and Carolynn; Eden’s goddaughter Aleapa; and brother Kenneth Ronald Mandell. She was preceded in death by her husband Stewart and her parents. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Sunrise of Bloomingdale where Gail spent her final years.

A chapel funeral service will take place on Sunday, July 19, 2026, 12:15 PM at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 W. Rand Road, Arlington Heights. Interment following at Shalom Memorial Park.
