Elyse was like a sister to me. She was intelligent, kind and funny. I enjoyed our walks together. My deepest sympathies to the family on your great loss.

Elyse was a great friend. If you needed help but weren’t able to help yourself, she took charge and made sure you were taken care of. On the other hand, she had a hard time deciding what shade of pantyhose would go with her dress and drove salesladies nuts. She always made me laugh with her goofy sense of humor. She was always so curious and would ask a million questions. We helped each other through divorces with humor and compassion. When she had Brooke, she became a wonderfully caring mother. She and Brooke were so close, it made me so happy that she had this loving bond with Brooke, the best daughter anyone could have. She loved her family fiercely. I never heard a disparaging word about anyone, She was a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and friend. Rest in peace my dear friend.

Elyse and I had a friendship that spanned decades. I believe that it began in the 6th grade at Boone School, but it feels like we always knew each other. She is and was a touchstone from my childhood in Rogers Park. And the fact that she remained in the Chicago area for almost her whole life while I moved away and had an entirely different life in the rural southern part of our state made our connection even more vital to me. We had the kind of friendship where it didn’t matter how much time elapsed between our last phone conversation or what stage of life we were in, we immediately picked up where we left off, and we were the same kids again, not two old friends now in their seventies. Elyse had a six sense about when I was going to call her. Even if it wasn’t one of our birthdays or any other special occasion, every time I called she would exclaim, “Bonnie! I was just thinking about you!” During recent conversations she had become very emotional and nostalgic for the good old days when we were 7th graders in love with the Beatles (Ringo was her favorite, Paul was mine). I think what we both missed was the innocence and joy of that era but also the strong bonds a little group of us formed with each other that turned out to last a lifetime. Elyse was my connection to that elusive past, to the Rogers Park dialect that I effortlessly slipped back into when talking to her, and to all those precious memories of parents and friends and places now only alive in our memories. Elyse had a sweetness, honesty and kindness that touched everyone who knew her well. My memory of her and our lifelong friendship lives on in my heart. My condolences to Jerry, Stephanie, Brooke, Thomas, Matthew, Liliana and all the family and friends who have been touched by this loss.

Elyse is out my first cousin. Our life would not be the same, if it wasn’t for her. She introduced us and 33 yrs plus later, we are grateful everyday she thought of us. We will miss her dearly and will think of her always.
