Obituary
Born on March 15, 1930, Judy was the middle child of three girls between Phyllis and Susan. She attended University of Chicago and graduated in 1949 with a general degree – a remarkable achievement for a woman back then. While teaching elementary school in Chicago, she met Bernard, now Barr, on a blind date. They married in 1953.
Judy loved being a mom. She was the tireless backbone of the home. She got her four kids up for school, cooked breakfast, drove them to and from Anshe Emet Day School while picking up other kids along the way. She prepared dinner for 6 to be served at 5pm sharp. She made sure homework was done each night, offering popcorn and TV as the reward. Only then, did she tuck herself into her armchair, alone in the living room, to read her beloved mystery novels.
While managing the family, she also managed Barr’s medical practice, keeping the books, doing the billing and collecting on delinquent payments when needed. She often thanked goodness for the Horwich JCC to give the kids someplace to go during summer vacation…she had work to do!
Judy was a textile artist. Weaving became her passion and she owned one of the first computerized looms run by an Atari computer. She traveled the country researching nineteenth century star-and-diamond coverlets to document these historical patterns. She compiled her findings into a book, American Star Work Coverlets (Design Books;1995). She was also accomplished at knitting and joyfully knit many custom garments and stuffed animals for the family.
Remaining to cherish her memory are Bernard (Barruch), her husband of 72 years; her children Miryam, Alex (Karen), Adryan, and Joseph (Barbara); her grandchildren Seth, Magnus (Jessica), Russell, Indigo and Isla; and great-grandchildren Oriana and Naomi.
Please join the family at her memorial celebration, Sunday, March 15, 2026 from Noon until 3 PM at Hackney’s on Lake, 1514 East Lake Avenue, Glenview, Illinois, 60025. Remarks will begin at 1 PM.
