Helene and my mother were best friends. If they weren’t together, then they were on the phone. Mom was rather strict….Helene, who was younger, became the indulgent “aunt.” She was there through thick and thin….When I needed an 8th grade graduation dress and my mother did not drive….Helene was the chauffer who took us to Old Orchard and Marshall Fields. As a celebration of finding “the perfect dress”, she treated us to lunch at Stauffers in the mall and introduced me to Belgian waffles (with whipped cream and berry sauce.) In recent years we talked a lot about old times and modern issues. She never missed a beat and tried to make the best of her declining health. Helene was the last of my parent’s “crowd”, and I will miss her, “Charlotte….is that you?” whenever I called. May she rest in peace . When my family came to America, Helena was a second mother to me. She had two sons. I was her little girl. I stayed with her when my younger sister was born, and then again when my youngest sister was born. She was with me in Israel when I experienced my first broken heart and she was nearby when I became a mom. She was there from my first taste of sour cream to our last visit, just before the marriage of my granddaughter. I love you Tante Helcha. Your Symaleh
