Obituary
Howard was born in Chicago in 1941 to the late I. Phillip and Freda (Mostow) Chapman. He attended Sullivan High School in Rogers Park and the University of Illinois for undergraduate and law school, where he also became a CPA. As a law student, Howard survived a debilitating plane crash, but he overcame substantial physical obstacles to build a meaningful life. For over 45 years, Howard was a Professor of Law at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he was a beloved teacher and a dedicated Associate Dean of Students. He was adored by his students and respected by his colleagues.
Howard loved taking family videos, dining “al fresca,” playing games (especially poker and Rummikub), family vacations, and the Chicago Cubs. For the last 5 years, he lived at North Shore Place, where he made many friends among the residents and staff, and where he helped lead a weekly Shabbat service. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. Memorial donations in his name may be made to Congregation Beth Shalom, www.bethshalomnb.org, the Jewish Community Pantry of the Milwaukee JCC, www.jccmilwaukee.org/program/jewish-community-pantry, or SSM Health Treffert Legacy, www.givetossmhealth.org. I remember Howard frequently breaking out his video recorder and that he very purposefully put tape over the light that indicated he was recording in the hopes to maintain a sense of candidness in his recording. We never knew if he actually was recording.
The service for Howard was so touching. I admire his intelligence, curiosity, and loving attitude.

Diane, I am sorry that my current health condition has prevented my wife and I from attending the services for your husband Howard. I hope in the future we can get together to renew our lost relationship as we are all aware that time is running out, and our past friendship needs to be renewed. Wishing you well, David and Elaine Kugler

Howard was one of the nicest down-to-earth people around. Always time for friends, colleagues and especially students. A sad loss for the family, friends and the Kent community.

Howard and I were colleagues for nearly 40 years. For part of that time, I had the privilege of working closely with him when he served as Associate Dean. He was marvelous with students and deeply respected by the faculty. He will be greatly missed.
My heartfelt condolences to Diane and the family.

Howard Chapman was an integral part of Chicago-Kent College of Law during the time I was a student (class of ’77). I recall Howard as one of the judges of my Moot Court competition. May his memory be for a blessing.

Howard was a wonderful human being, an amazing teacher, and the kind of colleague anyone would be very lucky to have. I can recall being one of the many law students in my class who were nervous and reluctant to take tax courses, but after the first few minutes of the first class, I could not have been happier and more at ease that Professor Chapman was at the podium (the fact that I was able to learn the subject of personal income tax, is proof that Howard performed miracles!). A few years later, I was doubly fortunate to have Howard as a colleague at Chicago-Kent who not only was always pleasant, interesting, and fun to chat with, but he also was always there with thoughtful professional advice and encouragement. I’ve missed seeing Howard around the law school since his retirement, and now will miss him even more. My thoughts and prayers go to Howard’s family and his many friends.

My condolences to Howard’s family. I joined Kent’s faculty shortly after Howard did, and he became a friend and a mentor. He will be missed.
